Mangalore - The Moderate Climate City
Mangalore is a beautiful town situated on the Konkan coast, Karnataka. Being the sea side city, Mangalore like rest of Karnataka is blessed with the moderate climate. Mangalore is named after the goddess Mangla Devi but many archaeologists believe that this city was named as "Manglapuram" in the 715 AD by the Pandya king, where as 11th century veteran Arabian travelers called in "Manjrur". Today, its new name is Mangalooru, the official name announced by the Karnataka government. This city is well known for its alluring beaches, grand temples, swaying coconut palms and scintillating streams.
The Major Attractions of Mangalore:
Kudroli Mosque: The travelers who want to go back in the past and unveil the history behind the most famous mosque in Mangalore, then Kudroli mosque can be the finest spot. Two mosques were built in this part of city. Both the mosques were known as "Jode Mazjid". These mosques were built during the pre-independence era. Two different authorities were in charge of these mosques. Later after the independence both the mosques got united. Earlier known as "Jode mosque" destroyed in the fire, another mosque was re constructed with similar designs and was named as Kudroli Mosque. This mosque is involved in the activities of development and education. Many of underprivileged and poor are getting benefited by the task of social activities undertaken by the sanctum.
Kudroli Sri Gokarnanatheshwara Temple: This was the only temple which stands different from the league of age old mythological temples. This temple came here as the result of wish by Shree Narayan Guru. This spiritual master hailed from Kerala. He was a great social reformer and a philosopher who worked for the improvement of society. This temple was built by his devotee H.Koragappa in the year 1912. Situated in Mangalore, this temple is a great study in architectural brilliance.
Mangladevi Temple: This holy sanctum is located 3 kms from Mangalore. Mangalore got its name from goddess Mangladevi. Dating back to the past, Mangla was the queen of Kerala(Malabar). She came in this city with one of the folks of Nath cult. It is believed that the queen took her last breathe at this place.
According to local population, the women who worship goddess whole heartedly gets all her wishes fulfilled. The girl who observes "Mangala Parvati Vrata"(fast) are bestowed with good marriages. This temple has a great importance for spinsters or maidens. Festivals like Dusshera, Ganesh Chathurthy and Navaratri are celebrated with great zeal.
Saint Aloysious Chapel: Nestled 1 km away from Nehru bus stand, this church is located in the campus of Aloysious Chapel. Built in the year 1885, Rev. Father Joseph Willy was the founder of this chapel. This chapel is the staunchly designed replica of the Sisten Chapel here. The ceilings of this chapel are painted with frescos and oil canvas paintings. The frescos are embedded on the dried walls over an area of 600 square meters. The oil canvas paintings in this chapel have a different sheen. All these paintings in this chapel are the work of a famous Italian Painter Anthony Moschemi.
This chapel is dedicated to Aloysious. Aloysious was just like other youths who had everything in his life. He gave away all his luxuries to help the people plagued by dreaded diseases. While serving others, he himself got fallen prey to the disease. At 23 years of age of he died and became an excellent instance for others. The campus of Aloysious in Mangalore preaches its students to experiment the values and ideals of the saint.
