Shimoga City Tourist Guide

Known as the bread basket of Karnataka, Shimoga is adorned with paddy fields, dense forests, and waterfalls. The perennial chains of rivers like Kali, Shravathi, Tadadi and Gangavathi emanate from Shimoga. These crystal clear rivers enrich the farming fields and boost the yield. The enigmatic beauty of Shimoga complemented by lush green trails of nature and fauna is worth exploring. The travelers here can go for camping, jungle safari and other adventure activities. During the peak season migratory birds flock to this region. The bird watchers and nature lovers can spend the best time of their holiday at this destination.

The Major Attractions of Shimoga:

Mandagadde: The Mandagadde Sanctuary situated in the Shettihalli wild life sanctuary in Karnataka, South India. There are more than 200 species of birds watching them can surely be a rewarding experience for the wild life enthusiasts. August is the Peak season of this wild life sanctuary. As there are not many lodges and hotels, the travelers as an alternative could also carry tents with them. Located 30 km from Shimoga, towards Teerthahalli, the travelers can also board the buses and taxi to reach the sanctuary.

Gudavi: Gudavi bird sanctuary is another tourist magnet which is worth visiting. There are around 191 species of birds in this sanctuary. June to November is the peak season when travelers can make a visit to Gudavi Wild Life sanctuary. Spread over an area of 73.68 hectares in Shimoga district, the visitors can trace varieties of birds like Heron, Pebis, Egret, Stone Bill and Cormorant. The timings of the Sanctuary are 6:00 AM to 6:00PM. The nearest major town is Sirsi and the route by road is Sirsi-Banavasi-Gudavi and it takes approximately time of 2 hours.

Sacred Heart Church, Shimoga: The structure with architectural magnificence, Sacred Heart Church is the second largest church in Shimoga. Spread over an area of 18,000 sq.ft, this sanctum has the capacity to hold 5000 people. Embellished with the Roman-Gothic architecture, the church is said to be the most distinguished sanctorum in India. The impressive carvings on the ceilings belong to the times immemorial when India was under the control of Western forces. The statue of Lord Jesus is the must see attraction of this Church. 

Shivappanaika Palace Museum: Built by the ruler Shivappa Nayaka, this temple carries the blend of Hoysala and Chalukya architectural style. Earlier known to be a big palace, this structure has been converted into a museum by the state government. Constructed completely with a rose wood, this museum houses the centuries old remains of various Hindu empires. The archeological remains from Keladi, Chalukya and Hoysala are displayed and maintained by the government authorities.

Tavarekoppa Tiger and Lion Safari: Located at the distance of 10 km from Shimoga while on a route to Sagar town, the travelers can reach this wild life sanctuary boarding taxi or bus. Started way back in 1988, this Tiger Safari is spread over an area of 200 acres of dense forest. The adventure enthusiasts can savor different colors of wilderness at Tavarekoppa Tiger and Lion safari. Tiger, lions, cheetah, deer, cheetal, reptiles and different species of birds are amongst the common finds. The Lion and Tiger Safari open from 9:00 Am to 5:00 Pm on all days. On Tuesday the Safari remains shut off. Special recreational facilities have also been introduced for the children. This sanctuary is the repository of natural wealth where spending a day or two can surely be an unforgettable experience.
